What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy) is a laparoscopic procedure that removes approximately 80% of the stomach, leaving a narrow tube-shaped sleeve. It is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery worldwide.
How Does It Work?
The procedure significantly reduces stomach capacity, limiting food intake. Additionally, production of the hunger hormone ghrelin is greatly reduced since the fundus region of the stomach (where ghrelin is produced) is removed, naturally decreasing appetite.
Expected Results
- 60-70% of excess weight is lost within 12-18 months
- Type 2 diabetes remission rate: 60-80%
- Significant improvement in sleep apnea, hypertension, and joint pain
- Surgery duration: approximately 45-60 minutes
- Hospital stay: 2-3 days
Recovery
Patients start with a liquid diet for the first 2 weeks, progressing to soft foods and then regular meals over 6-8 weeks. Most patients return to work within 1-2 weeks.
