Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) and HIPEC
CRS+HIPEC is a specialized treatment for cancers that have spread to the peritoneal surface (abdominal lining). The procedure involves two phases: complete removal of all visible tumors (cytoreduction), followed by bathing the abdominal cavity in heated chemotherapy solution (41-43°C) for 60-90 minutes.
Treated Cancers
- Appendiceal Tumors/PMP: Best outcomes with 80-90% 5-year survival
- Colorectal Cancer: Peritoneal metastases with 40-50% 5-year survival
- Gastric Cancer: Peritoneal carcinomatosis
- Ovarian Cancer: Advanced disease with peritoneal spread
- Peritoneal Mesothelioma: 50-65% 5-year survival
Advantages of HIPEC
HIPEC delivers 20-1000x higher drug concentration at the tumor site compared to systemic chemotherapy, with minimal systemic side effects including generally no hair loss or severe nausea.
