Who Are Eligible for Bariatric Surgery?

According to international guidelines, people who are most eligible for bariatric surgery are those who are in the group called Morbid Obesity group. Accordingly, people who are candidates for bariatric surgery are those with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater, and those with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater who have also comorbidities such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea or other respiratory problems, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), osteoarthritis, lipid anomalies, and heart diseases. Patients who will undergo bariatric surgery must be people who have tried to lose weight with other methods such as dieting and exercise but have failed.

In fact, the second important question should be “Who are Capable of Performing Bariatric Surgery?”. Because of the surgical difficulties, the unique characteristics of the patient group, and unique characteristics of complications, bariatric surgery should definitely be performed in sufficient medical centers by surgeons specialized in this field, experienced in endoscopic procedures, who have a command of advanced laparoscopic surgery techniques and can provide the required support to the patient with multidisciplinary approach.
